To say the least, I was a little flabbergasted by the outcome of the "[Rec]" phenomenon - having very much enjoyed the original - I was a pretty puzzled by this sequel. Those who have not seen the original are probably familiar with the American remake "Quarantine" and have a good grasp on the concept: a nightly TV reporter is caught up in a horrific contamination that is rooted in an apartment complex that expectedly erupts into chaos... This sequel picks up right where that movie left off with a SWAT team venturing into the catastrophic madhouse, learning a few new details pertaining to the rabies-resembling outbreak.
Not that a sequel to "[Rec]" was necessarily NEEDED, but when I first heard of it I was particularly interested and eager to check it out. First off, the whole priest involvement leading to the explanation of demonic possession - as opposed to the infectious scenario the original movie grounded so perfectly - really did not compute with me. Still, the whole thing was pretty "vague" about the whole thing, but what we got was a lot of "infected" people talking like Regan from "The Exorcist" (your mother's a cunt - type of stuff) and being able to replicate people's voices for the purpose of luring victims to their demise. A complete 180 like this just didn't work! Like I said, "[Rec]" had a good thing going with the straight-forward "outbreak" and the tenant upstairs concocting some bio-warfare sickness...
As much as this HUGE and highly unneeded "twist" sabotaged the premise, "[Rec] 2" is still watchable and has a few fairly "tense" and gory moments. The whole end scene was pretty awesome, actually, but I still wish they could have kept the whole 'possession' thing out of it...
