I'm pretty much on the fence when it comes to Jim Van Bebber's films. I thought "Deadbeat at Dawn" was a wildly entertaining gang-sploitation effort, while "The Manson Family" was, at best, passable. "Roadkill", however, is a swell little splatter short that miraculously condensed a "Schramm" or Ed Gein type story into a fittingly paced run-time...
John Martin is a crazed loner who lives in a cluttered, grimy house where he cuts up and eats raw roadkill. He spends the rest of his time drinking large quantities of beer while screaming his disapproval at bland television programing. There's also this chunk of pulsating meat he sees and decorative human faces nailed to the wall. Towards the end, he picks up a pair of hitch-hikers and gives them a taste of his sadistic compulsions by dismembering the guy and cooking the chick alive!
This is featured on the "Deadbeat at Dawn" DVD and I think there's a few double feature discs out there containing it along with Jim's other flick, "My Sweet Satan". "Roadkill" is surely a fine piece of gory goodness that serial killer film enthusiasts and Van Bebber fans alike should check out.
