Patrick, who works for the news site, Vice, gets a strange letter from his sister Caroline. She's an addict who has joined a cult and she wants him to visit her because she misses him. This sounds interesting to his editor, who wants to do a story about Eden Parish. So Patrick, the editor and a camera guy head off to Africa to investigate. They fly in by helicopter and are met by armed locals, who seem threatening. Then, the sister shows up and ushers them in, explaining that the guards are there for protection. At first the guys are won over--everything seems to be exactly what they say it is--a retreat from a world they don't like. Then, they meet "Father", the leader of the group--and there's something not quite right about the guy. There's also a few of the followers who say they are being kept prisoner--and that terrible things have happened in the camp.
This is an extremely effective plausible horror movie and the documentary footage style actually works in this instance. Directed by Ti West (HOUSE OF THE EVIL). Highly recommended.
