I generally hate hearing great things and lots of hype about a horror movie before I see it, usually because I'm disappointed about 90% of the time by the time I see it. The most recent case is SALVAGE, a low-key horror movie from the UK.
It begins with a father (Dean Andrews of LIFE ON MARS, ASHES TO ASHES) driving his teenaged daughter to visit her mother. She clearly doesn't want to go but doesn't have much of a choice. When she gets there she walks in on her mom having sex with someone so the reunion is not off to a good start. She throws a fit and flees to the next door neighbor's house. Meanwhile, there's news reports of a container washing up on the nearby shore and something violent happens to a kid in the area. Before anyone knows what's going on the town is quarantined by the military and everyone told not to leave their houses or they'll be shot. This isn't good for the mother, who is trapped there with her one-night-stand. Then, people start being killed, primarily the soldiers. Now, the mother wants to get to her daughter and make sure she's safe. We learn that whatever washed up in the container was a military experiment and that it's loose. Yet when we finally see what the monster is, it's a huge letdown. I didn't care about any of the characters and I didn't find this movie particularly suspenseful. So I can't recommend it.
