An American couple, Melissa (Amy Smart) and Yul, are on their honeymoon in China. He's Chinese, she's not. They see some sights at a local village then get in a car with their driver, Ping. He's to take them to the small village where his relatives live. However, on the long drive the couple fall asleep and awaken to see that he has stopped alongside the road. He tells them that he got lost and to stay in the car while he gets directions from a nearby community. An hour passes and this strange gong sound begins. Curious, they get out to investigate but the village appears deserted. They come across a bunch of animals set out for some type of sacrifice. Then, they hear human voices but no people. This creeps them out so they go back to their car, which they see is now covered in blood. They take off, not waiting for Ping to come back. A short while later something runs in front of them and they swerve off the road and get stuck in the mud. The person they almost ran over is a guy who is terrified and running from something. They are demons, who come out every year on this particular night.
If they don't outrightly kill you, they'll capture you and transform you into one of them.
The demons look like naked albino humans with long teeth and claws.
I was surprised at how damn creepy this movie is. As it progresses there's this real feeling of dread for the main characters. But of course this was all reminding me of another similarly themed movie that was made two decades ago--the Pierce Brosnan movie NOMADS, which is one of my favorite horror flicks.
