This is one of M. Night Shyamalan's better films... at least compared to The Village. I saw it a few years ago, but couldn't bring myself to watch it again because of that little fat-faced, buck-toothed kid that stars in it... Haley Joe Comet or something like that. However, I do like Bruce Willis... and I remember it being a good film... so I gave it another viewing. Willis plays a child psychologist who finds himself in a precarious position when one of his former patients confronts his failure to help him. He feels like he has been given a chance to redeem himself when he takes on a new patient in the form of the aforementioned Billy Joel Osmond... or whatever his name is. The kid is having problems at home with his mom, in school with the other kids and is possibly suffering from delusions... he thinks he sees dead people who do not know they are dead. Of course with Willis being a man of science, he thinks there are psychological reasons behind the kid believing this. As he spends more time with the boy... he realizes that there may be more to this than meets the eye.
This film is very well done and does not hit you in the face with gore... but the psychological aspects of the film might make it scary for some. The thought of there being a more sinister reason to why we get chills or the little hairs on the back of our necks stand up at times is pretty thought provoking. The acting is good, the mood is pretty dark for most of the film... and it has a pretty good twist at the end that you may or may not see coming. The only major flaw I could find with this cinematic effort is the casting of Halle Jo Berry... or whatever that kid's name is. In case you haven't noticed... he bugs the crap out of me... but the film is definitely worth seeing.
