A boy named Michael and his parents move from a flat in the city to an old fixer upper in the country. The mother is nine-month's pregnant and the boy is feeling a bit ignored. However, he finds something unexpected living in the old shed that's in the overgrown backyard. At first it appears to be a sick homeless man, but he senses that he's something more. The man's name is Skellig (Tim Roth) and he simply wants to be left alone. But Skellig isn't quite human. Since he will not get up to get any food, it comes to him--in the form of insects that flood into the shed and mushrooms that start growing on its walls. Even animals, such as the owls, bring him sustenance. Michael tells his new friend, a girl, about Skellig and takes her to meet him. She agrees that he's something extraordinary. Then Michael's mother goes into an early pregnancy and the baby girl is born with a serious heart condition, which makes him feel extremely guilty for not wanting a sister.
Michael's father is frustrated and starts manically doing work around the house--and in a fit burns down the shed. Michael is able to rescue Skellig just in time and takes him to an abandoned tower that overlooks the ocean. There, he finds out that the old overcoat he wears is hiding some withered wings. He also demonstrates that he can levitate himself up in the air.
As the situation with Michael's new sister becomes more dire, Skellig's strength increases--and Michael tries to convince him to heal his sister. But is he an angel?
I found this a very interesting movie, as it presents this possible supernatural being as just another part of nature. The effects, though minimal, are impressive, especially those bony wings.
