Christian Grey is a different sort of vampire. Once a vampire hunter himself he's careful not to drink too fully of his human food, fearing that he'll turn into the creature he so despises. What motivates his actions is to hunt down Malgaard, an evil vampire who wants to rule the world. Malgaard is also the one responsible for turning Grey's wife into a vampire, who in turn changed him. But a government agency, headed by his old human mentor (sort of like Van Helsing), is also after the head vampire. One of the government agents finds that she's dying of an inoperable brain tumor and tries to make an arrangement with Grey-if she supplies him with information about the whereabouts of Malgaard he'll change her into a 'Necromorph' when the time comes. He reluctantly agrees, primarily because he finds himself falling for this agent. Her agent boyfriend, on the otherhand, tries to hunt them down after he discovers her betrayal. He loves her but can't bear the thought of her becoming a 'leech'. Ultimately, they all must also stop Malgaard before he gets in possession of a mystical medallion that will enable him to walk in the daylight. In the end all these characters converge for a final showdown-and a very satisfactory ending. SLEEPLESS NIGHTS is one of the best vampire movies I've ever seen. Although it follows the basic plot-points of John Carpenter's VAMPIRES, there's plenty of new twists to the mythos. The performers, all unknowns, do an exceptional job, particularly Matthew Thomas as the sympathetic vampire Christian Grey. If you think the vampire genre is getting old and tired you NEED to rent this movie-it'll turn you around! Check out www.sleeplessnights-themovie.com for more info.
