A young Inuit boy is found dead after falling from the roof of an apartment building--and the boy's friend, a thirty-something half-Inuit woman who lives in the same building--starts to investigate. You see, she knows that the boy was terrified of heights and would never go up to the roof unless someone was chasing him. She discovers that his father was a diver on a mining expedition in the arctic and that he was infected with a prehistoric worm-like parasite. It killed him almost immediately but managed to live longer in the son. The mining company, led by Richard Harris (ORCA) had discovered a very unique meteor that radiates unlimited energy--and this energy is what reawakened the parasite. The mining company wants to somehow harness this power and make millions of dollars. But Smilla wants nothing but revenge on the people who killed her young friend. In a scene very similar to the ending scene in ORCA, Richard Harris runs out on the ice, the ice breaks and he sinks into the freezing water. Although this film would probably have never been made without the success of the X-FILES, this movie's dramatic and mystery elements surpasses it's small screen inspiration.
