The Mask washes down a river and is picked up by a small dog and taken to his house. The people who live in the house are Avery (Jamie Kennedy), a struggling cartoon artist, and his wife. He's supposed to go to a work Halloween Party and doesn't have a costume-so he puts on that mask his dog found. What it does is transform him (as it did with Jim Carey in the first movie) into this green, cartoonish mayhem of energy. He's not only a hit at the party-he goes home and gets his wife pregnant. The creator of the mask, Loki (Alan Cumming of XMEN 2, FLINSTONES IN VIVA ROCK VEGAS), must recover it and give it to his father, Odin, or else he'll be banished and stripped of his powers. He keeps on coming across these fake masks, first at a museum and then at an antique shop. Finally, it's revealed to him that a child was born of the mask-and so he systematically makes a list of all the children born on a particular day-and visits all of their homes.Because the child was conceived when Avery was wearing the mask, this kid has those same powers, able to shape-shift. And because so much attention is given to the baby Avery's dog is jealous-and so puts on the mask and tries to dispose of the tot in a Wyle E. Coyote way. It's exactly like one of those Roadrunner cartoons...and it works.SON OF THE MASK is one sequel that is far far better than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it as much as the first movie.
