Directed by Richard Kelly, this is as much a thematic sequel to his DONNY DARKO than anything else. It's about an an action hero actor, Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) with amnesia, who is married to a presidential candidate's daughter and is part of a weird experiment involving doubles and breaching the fourth dimension. Another person involved in this experiment is Roland Taverner (a very subdued Seann William Scott), a police officer.
There's also Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an ex-porn star who has a very specific business plan.
My favorite part of the movie is the casting of the actors, which include lot of former Saturday Night Live performers cast against type, such as Jon Lovitz as a corrupt cop and Cheri Oteri as a terrorist. There's also Justin Timberlake, Zelda Rubinstein, Curtis Armstrong and Christopher Lambert.
In sheer weirdness, SOUTHLAND TALES is along the lines of A SCANNER DARKLY, so be prepared.
