For someone who has never seen the bulk of horror and fantasy films that have been made, such as an eight-year-old, this will probably be a good movie. However, as an adult, this is very much familiar territory and it was an effort to keep my interest on the movie.
The premise is that a family, going through a separation with the mother and father, moves to an old family house which once belonged to a guy with the unlikely name of Arthur Spiderwick. Hidden amongst his study is a book he had written, "The Spiderwick Chronicles", which uncovers the hidden magical world that exists around us. However, the ogre Mulgarath wants to obtain because it will make him more powerful, so he constantly sends his army of goblins to try and get it. The house, however, is in a protective circle, so they can't get the book. It's a lot of back and forth and we see a lot of computer special effects. Yes, the creatures are cool looking for about five minutes but that's about it. One of the more distracting aspects of the movie is that the twin boys are portrayed by one actor, Freddie Highmore, and that was stretching the plausibility, much ore than any magical creatures.
