This is a fun adaptation of the Will Eisner comic book character with clever dialogue, heavily stylized action and some weird moments. What best describes it is "What if Stanley Kubrick made a superhero movie instead of making DR. STRANGELOVE?". I'm not saying Frank Miller is the next Stanley Kubrick. only that the movie has that weird bent to it.
The Spirit is a crime fighter in a 1950's looking city, though people have the internet and computers. When he's shot he quickly heals and can't seem to die. Why?
He thinks there may be a connection between him and his arch nemesis The Octopus (Samuel Jackson). When someone asks him why he thinks this his deadpan reply is "because he told me there's a connection".
Much of the movie involves him reuniting with a childhood girlfriend, Sand Saref, who has returned to The City to acquire something very valuable to her-- armor of Jason of the Argonauts and a vase containing the blood of Heracles. The Octopus wants to drink the blood because he believes it will make him immortal.
I found one of the most entertaining parts of the movie are the Octopus' henchmen (Louis Lombardi), which he creates in his lab. They all look alike and he kills them when they become too irritating. His assistant, Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) doesn't do all that much.
The movie does have a sense of humor, which I think confuses people into thinking it's a spoof. The one thing I could have done without is Samuel Jackson in yet another one of these types of roles. He's becoming a spoof of himself, which is not a good thing
This is not a bad movie, I think it's just different than what people expected.
I enjoyed Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT far more than I enjoyed overrated THE DARK KNIGHT.
