This independent horror flick begins with an explanation of the urban myth of "The Spook", then goes to an unlikely overweight television reporter, talking about the escape of some mental patients from an asylum. She's then killed by one of them. Talk about bad timing. Then we go to some of the characters, which include the sheriff and his deputy, who looks like she's twelve. This is sort of disturbing in the scenes where he's fantasizing about her. There are plenty of killings, with a woman getting a machete through her head and a guy getting slain with a shovel. I was impressed with the scene where another guy gets his eye poked out from something piercing the back of his head.
I would say the strongest performance is by Warren Hogan as "The Spook", as he doesn't need to talk to convey his menace. In a flashback we learn of his origin, how he was taunted and given a face-full of biting snakes, which obviously drove him insane.
This ultra-low budget slasher movie is low on production value and acting ability but high on having a memorable villain and some simple but effective makeup effects. It was directed and shot in five days by David Daze.
