Stage Ghost (2000)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger
11.27.04

Stage Ghost (2000) The 'Haunted Western' is an odd sub-genre, one that often doesn't work. In this one, a deputy sheriff (Edward Albert) is bringing in his prisoner (Christopher Atkins) across the country, to the nearby town. He stops at a secluded store, where a group of people are waiting for a Stage Coach. When the coach shows up it is empty-and covered with blood. They try to leave in it but end up back at the store, for various reasons. One of them is these ghosts riding horses, which are really disguised outlaws in search of a hidden treasure. There is also the Indian arrows that come out of nowhere-and the notes accompanying them which say 'Give it back'. They have no idea what it means. As the movie progresses people are picked off by the arrows-and the lawman and the criminal become allies. There's also a love interest that develops for Atkins with a young woman. We eventually find out that there is indeed a supernatural cause for all of this, which stems back from the Spanish enslaving the local American Indians hundreds of years before. The story was okay, more of a hokey adventure movie than a horror film. What I did not like was that the majority of the film took place during the night and all of these scenes were shot 'day for night', which means they were filmed during the bright sunlight with a blue filter over the lens. This never looks right, particularly with all the shadows on the ground, and only succeeded in cheapening the production.Directed by Stephen Furst (BABYLON 5, Flounder from ANIMAL HOUSE) and features an extended cameo by John Vernon (the principal in ANIMAL HOUSE).
