Two smugglers, Tycho Johns (Connor Trinneer of STAR TREK:ENTERPRISE) and Lei Chen, are caught by the government for running guns to rebels. They are given a choice. They either get thirty years to life in a penal colony or go on a mission. This mission involves recovering a mysterious crate from Rigel 4. So they choose the job. But when they finally get to the crate they see it holds a human--and she awakens. It's a young woman who doesn't speak. They arrange for transport on a ship but it's shot down onto an inhospitable planet where they discover a scientific base. It's overrun by these giant bugs which they have to fight. Most of the locations look like they were shot in an abandoned quarry and there's a weird scene where it looks like they are on the tracks of an old subway.
This is an entertaining enough movie but it's definitely an amalgamation of better known shows such as STAR TREK and FIREFLY, with the stylistic effects of the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA thrown in.
