Although this is a bit different than the Robert A. Heinlein novel it's one of the better alien invasion movies, ever. Yes, ever. The premise is that an alien insect civilization is attacking earth by projecting meteors at it.
The story focuses on Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and fellow soldiers Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer) and Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) as they move through the ranks. While Rico's girlfriend is being trained as a starship pilot, he and Dizzy are designated as soldiers on the front and come face to face with these big crab-like creatures. For once this is actually a great use of computerized effects--and I think this was the first time (in '97) where I saw CGI used for gore effects, with solders being sliced and diced by the monsters.
I enjoyed the computerized Saturday Morning spinoff, ROUGHNECKS: THE STARSHIP TROOPERS CHRONICLES (1999) which was true to this movie. The second sequel is okay but the third, which has the return of the Rico character, sucked.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven (BASIC INSTINCT, HOLLOW MAN).
