This is an odd, kind of "artsy fartsy" movie, that features a great ape costume by Rick Baker. D.D. Winters (aka Vanity) portrays an actress who is having trouble with her abusive boyfriend, Lobo. He doesn't want her around, though no reason is given at first. Then, we're taken to an island where she and Lobo are living. At this point I'm assuming it's a fantasy dream, as it's the total opposite of their behavior-and environment from the beginning of the picture. Vanity is naked quite a bit. She soon befriends a ferocious, baboon snouted ape who she names blue because of his blue eyes. Throughout the rest of the movie Lobo becomes more and more violent and animal-like, while Blue becomes gentler, more caring to her. I supposed TANYA'S ISLAND is suppossed to be some variation on "Beauty and the Beast" and in that regard it works.
This movie is definitely worth checking out for 1) Vanity and 2) That Ape costume.
