In the premiere episode of this series, entitled HOUSECALL, which takes place on a small farmhouse in 1936, an elderly doctor (Bingo O'Malley, CREEPSHOW, TWO EVIL EYES) goes to check on a young man who believes he's going to transform into someTHING. We're not sure until the end if he's really going to change or if he's simply crazy. The boy's mother is trying to protect her son and, at his request, has tied him to the bed. She admits to the doctor that strange things have been going on in the area, such as the disappearances of young girls. Is her son responsible? The ending that writer Jeff Monahan has come up with will definitely surprise you. This 25 minute episode had me hooked from the beginning-and it's far better, both in story and production value, than any episode of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE or MONSTERS I've seen. The three actors give solid, believable performances. Bingo O'Malley is absolutely perfect as the old doctor. HOUSECALL also shows that Savini is a far more talented director than he is an actor. It's great that this series gives Savini an opportunity to direct.HOUSECALL gets the highest recommendation I can give a horror film-and I eagerly await to see the other episodes to follow.
