Denholm Elliott portrays a twisted biochemist who has created a legion of mutated humans from a new addictive drug he has created. Although the drug expands their minds and gives them ecstasy it horribly disfigures them. A kidnapped prostitute named Nicole, who services the doctor, is given the drug by the creatures. Although it expands her mind, giving her psychic powers, it does not transform her into a monster. Now, the doctor wants her back and hires a man named Bain to retrieve her. But Bain was once in love with Nicole, which complicates matters. Although there are some decent special effects with the creatures and a meltdown sequence obviously inspired by that scene in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (around which time this movie was released to video), this movie is extremely ponderous in its pacing and you never get involved with the characters. Co-written by Clive Barker, with an early appearance by Miranda Richardson as one of the mutations.
