This is an interesting vampire show from creator Alan Ball (Six Feet Under), based on the series of novels by Charlaine Harris. The premise is that vampires are "out of the closet" since a synthetic blood called Tru Blood, was created by the Japanese. This new population of the undead wants the rights afforded every other American citizen and we mostly see this through the television programs the characters watch.
I found the main character of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) some irritating in the first several episodes but she kind of grows on you. She's a waitress who can read minds--and when she meets the town's newest resident, Bill Compton, she is immediately attracted to him because she can't read his mind. Bill, by the way, is also a vampire who has been around since the Civil War.
The supporting characters include Sookie's best friend Tara, Sookie's brother Jason, who is a sex addict, and Sam Merlotte, who owns the bar she works in and who is in love with her.
Women are being killed in the town and it's suspected that Bill or some other vampire is responsible, though their blood is not drained. It's a serial killer--and it is someone no one suspects. There is also a shape-shifter afoot.
The funniest thing about the show is the way vampire Bill says her name, Sookie, which sounds obscene.
Bill shows his devotion to her when he walks through daylight, burning to a crisp all the way, as he tries to save her from a serial killer who is after her. In the last few episodes Michelle Forbes (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: RAZOR) makes an appearance as a potential villain who has a past relationship with Sam.
TRUEBLOOD is a fun, addictive show, very much a nod to the original DARK SHADOWS.
