This made-for-television movie begins on a Louisiana College campus, with one of three friends getting separated at a party. The guy, high on Ecstasy, wanders off into the nearby woods and is attacked by something up in the trees. You can take a guess as to what that something is. The next day we are introduced to a mother, Maddy (Lucy Lawless of SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND), who seems overwhelmed. She and her husband are biology teachers at that same college. After the drained-of-blood body is found, the police come to her class and take away the two students for questioning, believing they may have something to do with it. But Maddy insists they are innocent and asks to examine the wounds, which are clearly animal bites. She can't identify them at first. Then, two fisherman, one of them talk-show host Craig Ferguson, are killed in their boats. Then, there are two large attacks. One is at an underground rave, the other aboard a yacht that's having a party aboard. The teacher and students manage to capture some bats in a net and discover they are a mutation, with twice the number of fangs, which allow them to tear flesh from prey and suck more blood. In the end, the entire roost is gassed, putting an end to the slaughter.
As a killer animal movie this USA movie is decent enough, though the scripts relies a little too much on coincidence. I was surprised how gory the effects are and how good the CGI bats came off. Recommended if you're tired of all the lame Asylum animal movies on Syfy Channel.
