A student photographer named Deb (Stefanie Tapio) is taking pictures of her two friends, Trixie and Karen, out in the woods of Lincoln, Nebraska, for her college portfolio. Afterwards the trio come upon a length of iron chain and one of them recounts the legend of the local witch. She was hung a hundred years before by the townspeople and a huge iron chain was put around that same tree in order to keep her spirit bound there. She's also supposed to grant people's wishes so one of the friends makes a wish. This has dire consequences for her later on. Deb still lives with her mother and when she returns home sees that her older brother Mark (Martin Kenna) is visiting. He's sick so is crashing out in his old bedroom. He explains that he got sick after seeing a huge white owl in the woods the night before. This is not only creepy it also suggests the writer recently watched THE FOURTH KIND.
Soon, the friend who made the wish has a seizure and is rushed to the hospital. Then, her brother starts acting weird. Deb and her other friend go back to the woods and are chased by a bunch of people in mud-covered hoodies. They take her friend. She reports this to the police but they don't believe her. So she confides in her brother's roommate, Brent, and he helps her, primarily because he's interested in her, of course. Deb ultimately finds out the truth about everything in a secret underground chamber where the witch was imprisoned all those years ago.
WAKE THE WITCH is a good, solid independent feature which demonstrates the high quality that achieved with $10,000 bucks and lots of creativity.
