When this series first aired I couldn't get past the second episode, the one in which Juliette Lewis character is brutally killed in front of the town by the local sheriff. Well over a year later, after hearing that the entire series was decent, I gave it another shot. What really helped me was knowing the "big secret" right away, that the members of this town were all put in suspended animation and that it's now two thousand years in the future. They are also the only remaining humans. Our "replacements" are these demonic looking, fanged humanoids that are called "Abbies".
In the first episode Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) is sent in to investigate the disappearance of two agents, one of which is his partner, Kate (Carla Gugino). He gets into an accident and awakens in a hospital. Everyone is weird, especially Nurse Pam (Melissa Leo), who knows much more than what she's telling. Ethan's wife, Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon) and teenaged son go to the town to find them-and they end up there as well. She assigned to work at a realty company and the boy goes to the odd town school. Burke discovers a protective wall is around the town, is let in on the secret-and soon becomes the Sheriff. He's completely changed sides but there's a good reason-survival. There's also a faction of townspeople who are rebels and want to escape beyond the wall-and they have no idea of what's outside. They all think they are in the present day and are being kept prisoner. The leader of Wayward Pines is "Dr Jenkins" (Toby Jones), the genius who coordinated the entire project. We learn that Nurse Pam is his sister and that the two of them are responsible for almost everything that has happened.
In the last few episodes the rebels manage to drive a truck through the gate, letting in the ferocious Abbies, who soon start to kill the townsfolk. The survivors hide down in an underground facility and Ethan makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his wife, son and the inhabitants of the town.
