The commercials for this new series on the WB were intriguing, showing glimpses of Edgar Rice Burrough's most famous character. My reaction to the first episode is somewhat mixed. In this version, which takes place in present day, Tarzan has been kidnapped from his jungle home by his uncle (brother of his father) and taken back to New York where he's kept a prisoner in this huge building. Although the uncle (Mitch Pileggi) says he's altruistic, wanting to help his nephew, there's also the fact that he's keeping him so that he'll in no way jeopardize his hold on the Greystoke Company. And what about Jane? She's a policewoman who Tarzan has immediately fallen for. There's also Jane's boyfriend, also a cop, who will probably be an antagonist for the Lord of the Jungle in future episodes. While the casting of Travis Fimmel as Tarzan is right on-he looks the part, has the presence and definitely those ape-moves, 're-imagining' Jane as a law enforcer simply doesn't work. Already I can see how he'll be helping her solve crimes around the city, like a vigilante superhero, something he was never meant to be.
