Although the brunt of the story here is about a photographer/writer (Catherine McCormack) doing research on a murder that happened a hundred years ago-the good parts are those flashbacks to the past where a vicious murder of two women happened. One was bludgeoned to death and the other killed with an ax. One of the local fisherman is blamed and convicted of the crime-but did he really do it? Or is it the quiet housewife (Sarah Polley of the new DAWN OF THE DEAD remake) who says she witnessed the murders, a woman who has a LOT of anger to vent. The ending is somewhat of a surprise and how it's presented is indeed a horror story (particularly because it's based on a true event). I just could have done without the present day story with the marriage woes of the photographer and her husband (Sean Penn). Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (NEAR DARK).
