Where Have All The People Gone? (1974)

A father, his eighteen-year old son David and his sixteen year old daughter Deborah (Kathleen Quinlan) are on a camping trip in the mountains when there's this strange flash of light in the sky and an earthquake. They are looking for fossils in a cave, which starts to collapse, and narrowly escape. A friend of theirs was outside and tells them about the weird light. They don't know what to make of it. Then the guy begins to get sick--and they think that what caused the light was a bomb and he has radiation sickness. Their car won't start, so they start making their way back to the nearby town. On the way the guy dies--and soon after collapses into a pile of white dust. When they get to the town it's deserted--and it looks like the same fate befell the entire population.
The family believes that their mother may still be alive, so are on a quest back home to find her. When they finally come across a survivor it's a woman who is in shock. She will not talk and is catatonic. The daughter names her Ann, since they have to call her something. She's terrified of dogs for some reason. It's not until they find another survivor, a boy, that she begins start acting normal. When he's surrounded by a pack of dogs she starts screaming about that's how her children were killed, ripped apart by the crazed dogs.
This is a good end-of-the-world movie, tame by today's standards but it sure creeped me out when I was seven. A similar fate would befall humanity again in NIGHT OF THE COMET, made a decade later (1984)
