Loosely based on the H.G. Lewis movie from 1970 this stars Crispin Glover as a magician who seemingly dismembers women in front of a live audience. These scenes are truly gruesome and worth the rental. But, alas, he's only it it about twenty minutes as the story revolves around a young man who dresses like he's living in the 1950's, a man who may not be what he seems. This is one of those movies that tries to be like ANGEL HEART and JACOB'S LADDER but instead of coming into its own simply reminds you of those better movies. The story is a convoluted mess.
What I found interesting is that one of the movie's characters, "Jinky", is portrayed by Joshua John Miller, who had portrayed the kid vampire "Homer" in NEAR DARK. And Jeffrey Combs is unrecognizable as "The Geek".
