As a die-hard fan of the show I thought this answered all the questions left hanging at the anti-climatic ending of the series and realistically established what happened to the characters in the meantime. It was totally realistic and made sense and the crux of the story is about Mulder and Skully's relationship, not only between themselves but their work with the "X-Files" and what that means to them.
The story centers around a young female FBI agent who is kidnapped and a psychic (Billy Connelly of FIDO) who may be able to lead them to her. He seems to be getting these psychic visions but are they real or is he somehow responsible for the woman's disappearance? The FBI tells Mulder that if he helps the agency they'll give him a clean slate and drop all charges against him. He agrees--and finds that he's missed being out in the field, investigating strange phenomena. What they discover involves organ transplants and a very strange experiment, almost taken from a 1950's B-horror movie.
There are very little special effects, none of the alien mythology whatsoever, but that's okay, as it's a low key movie that successfully re-establishes these characters and makes me look forward to the next movie. The next movie, however, needs to be more "epic"--and with aliens.
