Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe is dead. So how is it that Spiderman is out and about in New York City? It's because another boy, Miles Morales, it bitten by a similar genetically altered spider from Osborne's lab. But his powers are a little different, such as being able to turn invisible and emitting a "venom blast". The one person he confides to is his Asian friend, Ganke, who is excited about these superpowers. Miles thinks he's a mutant--and in this Ultimate Universe being a mutant is a criminal offense, because of Magneto nearly destroying New York City in a flood.
What I like about this is that Mile's origin begins a bit before Peter Parker is killed--and that he's witness to his predecessor's demise. He gets feedback from Gwen Stacy and Spiderwoman and is picked up by Nick Fury and the Ultimates. They start taking him seriously when he helps defeat Electro. In fact, Fury has Spider woman drop off a package to Miles--which is a new, darker Spiderman costume. She tells him "He said you get one chance. He said you were getting no chances but yesterday you bought yourself one chance." Now, he's officially Spiderman.
Introducing a new Spiderman that's accepted is a tough challenge--but Brian Michael Bendis pulls it off. Highly recommended.
