Author: Ross Campbell
This new graphic novel from Tokyopop is an entertaining and interesting twist on the zombie genre, with some truly offbeat characters and plenty of gore.
Rylie is a young punk rock lesbian African-American girl who lives in the small island town of Buffalora. She works at an ice cream shop called 'I Scream', which serves flavors like Romero Raspberry, 'The Stuff' and Hellraisen. Her friend Naomi, who recently lost her parents in a bus accident, arrives, though she seems hesitant to get romantically involved with Rylie. That night it rains - and the adults on the island begin to mysteriously turn into zombies. Rylie and her young friends band together to survive from the flesh eating creatures, though it's pretty much a lost cause. They are hopelessly outnumbered and one of them is changing into one of the zombies
THE ABANDONED works on several levels. On one hand it's a comment on how society - or is it adulthood? - consumes youthful energy and independence. It's also a clever homage to the classic zombie movies of Romero and Fulci, with plenty of 'in jokes' and nods to those who came before. But most importantly, it's a well written book, with fleshed-out (no pun intended) characters and a fast-moving story. As far as Undead tales, this is way up there with such graphic novels as Eric Red's CONTAINMENT. Highly recommended.
I'm looking forward to Campbell's next book, hopefully a continuation of Rylie's story...
