By Michael Jan Friedman
Best-selling author Michael Jan Friedman, who I normally associate with the better Star Trek novels, tackles a different sort of future in this new ALIENS book. In this sequel to ALIENS 4, the cloned Ripley, the android Call and the mercenary Johner (portrayed by Ron Perlman in A4) and the paraplegic mechanic Vreiss track down a new outbreak of the ALIENS.
What they discover is why Ripley's original ship, the Nostromo, was sent to investigate the planet where the aliens were first discovered, why that colony was taken over in ALIENS 2 and why she was implanted with the queen Embryo in ALIENS 3 by her own government. The answer Friedman comes up with does work - and opens up the possibility of a whole new series of Ripley/ALIEN novels.
They track a new outbreak of Aliens to an isolated Botanical ship. By the time they get there one of the people has been implanted by the 'face hugger', though he spawns not one creature but a dozen of them. For this creature is a slightly different species of ALIEN, one that takes away Ripley's advantage of having their acid blood flowing in her veins.
For those of you readers who need an ALIEN fix, as no new movies are coming out anytime soon, check this novel out.
