Author: Sarah Pinborough
After reading BREEDING GROUND author Sarah Pinborough has become my favorite 'best new horror writer'.
The novel begins with couple Matt and Chloe, who are expecting their first child. Chloe's physical well-being starts to deteriorate and she's gaining huge amounts of weight although she's not even eating. At first Matt thinks it's the child - but when she gives 'birth' to something else entirely, he realizes that she was only being used for a breeding host. What emerges from her resembles a large, white spider - and it was feeding on their unborn baby. Matt narrowly escapes being food and meets up with other survivors in London.
What has happened is that nearly all the women in town have been giving birth to these creatures - and these womens' loved ones have become their food. Matt meets up with other survivors, which include three older men, a young man and two sisters who aren't infected with whatever is going on.
But these 'Spiders' wish to kill them and it's a battle until they make refuge at a protected army base, where they find out that this weirdness is happening all over the world. They also discover that there are worse things to come.
I would best compare BREEDING GROUND to one of the best 'zombie' novels I've ever read, with these spider monsters taking the place of the undead. In fact, they are much more threatening because we have no idea what these things are or what they want, other than to obviously take over the planet and consume all of the humans.
Although the novel ends in such a way as to beg a sequel, this is nevertheless one of the best apocalyptic novels I've read in years.
