The story begins with an old guy, the leader of the NightBreed, saying that "We are not alone" and that "Midian calls all her children". Then, the tale flashbacks to 1857 Lousiana where two escaped slaves are pursued by a gang of white guys. The werewolf-like Peloquin shows up and kills the woman. Then, in 1945 Boston, a Senator goes to a brothel to visit a porcupine-like prostitute he favors. Then, it's back to the slaves. The hunters think they kill Peloquin and the woman is transformed into a similar creature.
In issue #2 Peloquin and the slave woman have escaped but go back to hunt the gang--and see them whipping her captured boyfriend. She goes to help but gets her leg caught in a bear trap. Peloquin ends up killing all these men--and then has to fight a group of slaves because they are afraid of them. In Boston, the Senator is about to have sex with the female monster and finds someone else's tie-tack in her bed. He's upset because he thought he was the only one for her and that he had an exclusive with this prostitute. He freaks out and hits her. As he's about to kill her with a vase she shoots her quills at him. Once the Madame sees what she did she tells her to go away--and she's about to kill herself by jumping off a bridge. The old man saves her, telling her that they are kin. And Peloquin, nearly dead, is rescued by the same guy, who is driving a horse drawn carriage. In the present, we see that he is telling these two stories to Aaron Boone, the main character from THE NIGHTBREED movie.
In #3 the old leader is still talking to Boone, who doesn't feel very welcome in Midian. In fact, Peloquin is very hostile to him. Then the old man tells another story of the NightBreed that takes in 1478 in Italy. A group of religious people are after a young woman who is garbed in a cloak. She throws a brick at them which shatters an oil lamp and sets one of them afire. In San Francisco in 1968 Reverend Ashberry, a young man, goes to convert some Hippies. He's with his parents, who are very religious. A woman comes on to him and leads him to her place, where they have sex. He ends up killing brutally killing her. Back in Italy, the lizard woman retreats to a cave where she has a clutch of eggs that are about to hatch. As the priest and followers are about to smash them they hatch, revealing normal looking babies. One baby starts talking, reciting the Lord's Prayer. The priest thinks this is a miracle. The point of the two very different stories is that a monster seemingly gave birth to the divine while a holy couple gave birth to a demon.
I enjoyed these first three issues far more than I enjoyed the original NIGHTBREED movie, as I found it far more interesting. This is another great series from BOOM! STUDIOS. Recommended.
