Conquistador (2003)
Fiction Review by The Gravedigger
05.05.03

Conquistador (2003) S.M. Stirling does it again. After his 'Nantucket' series of time-travel books (where the island of Nantucket was cast several thousand years back in time) I didn't think there could be as an engaging premise. Here, The story concerns John Rolfe, a former WWII soldier who accidently discovers a gateway to an alternate Earth where the Americas have never been colonized by Europeans. From the late 1940's to 2009, he sets up a kingdom of his own in this new wilderness, careful not to repeat the mistakes his home world has made. He limits the amount of colonization, protects animal species and maintains a way of life he always wanted to live-basically a romantized version of the pioneer days. But what he's also done is eliminate most of the amerindian populations and introduce African and Asian animals to the Americas-like lions, tigers, elephants-even Kangaroos, just because he thought it was cool looking. And, of course, because he's a big game hunter.
In 2009 a fish and game warden stumbles upon this secret when strange animals start appearing on the black market-like condors and even a dodo! He falls in love with Rolfe's grand-daughter-but is forcibly taken to this new world so he won't expose the secret to the U.S Government (who would presumably ruin it and turn it into another giant strip mall). He's torn between liking this new world (something he'd fantasized about) and disliking John Rolfe's methods, but in the end comes to terms with it when both worlds are threatened. If you like time-travel and/or alternate reality novels then you're guaranteed to love this book.
