Written by Patrick Whalen. John Winter is a former government hit man who was recently diagnosed with a fatal disease. He wants to retire in peace but the organization he works for won't let him--they'd prefer to take him out. So he disappears to the Northwest coast, to a little town in Washington State, where he soon falls in love with the town's woman police captain. This isn't exactly a turn of events he's planned. Meanwhile, a moderate earthquake has unleashed a demonic force, called the Wintiko, which has been imprisoned for the past 800 years in a cavern. It takes the souls of its victims and then reanimates them as zombies, slowly but surely creating its own tribe of the undead as it makes its way down the mountain towards the town. Winter and the police captain figure out what's going on, with the help of a half-breed Indian, and it's up to them to stop the creature. This is a good indian myth/zombie horror novel, not quite as engaging as Whalen's MONASTERY or NIGHT THIRST, but a good read nonetheless.
