I was so excited to read this sequel to DESCENT. And as much as I love that book, about the discovery of a subterranean species of human, I must say that this follow-up is an extreme disappointment. It has none of the sense of adventure - or creepiness - of the first book.
It's ten years after the events of DESCENT and picks up with the story of the two survivors - and those two survivors end up going back underground to confront whatever demons haunt them. Whereas in the first book it was plausibly presented that these underground humans were the basis of devils and demons, as they are sometimes malformed and even have wings and horn-like growths (because of deep ground radiation) the author undoes all of this by introducing a supernatural creature that may be the real Satan. Now the book isn't horror, it's fantasy, and I wanted a horror book.
So, if you loved THE DESCENT you'll wisely pretend that this sequel doesn't exist.
