Author: Tim LebbonTim Lebbon's latest horror novel from Leisure books is the surreal tale of Cain, who is newly released to the outside world after spending years recovering in a hospital. During his childhood he was kept isolated by his insane father, who had strange ideas about his son achieving supernatural powers. Now, as he lives in a sort of halfway house for weird individuals, he begins to realize that those powers his father talked about are indeed real-and that he has the ability to wield them.First, he learns that the crippled man who used to live in his apartment was killed by what the police said was 'a wild dog'. Then, he learns that his neighbors are more than they appear to be. The nun has the ability to fly, the woman clown can have different appearances, the flute player can freeze creatures in time-and another one is basically a werewolf. They each have unique abilities they have discovered within themselves and explored. They also think of themselves as much better than mere mortals. To Cain, who is on a quest for self-discovery, this group of beings both appeals and repulses him. On one hand he feels that his ability to 'know things' about people was forced upon them by his father's desires-and at the same time this power is very much who he is. On a broader spectrum, Cain's journey for self-discovery is much like everyone's-there's compromises along the way but it's shaped by what he can live with-or not.DESOLATION is not a fun ride, that's for sure, but it is darn unsettling-and will haunt you for a time.
