This hardcover archive collection from Dark Horse reprints the first seven issues of the original Gold Key Doctor Solar comic books from the 1960's. It's very cool.
The first story, "Solar's Secret" is the origin story. Solar is working on an atomic pile at his lab but it's sabotaged by evil Dr. Rasp, who is working for a shadowy figure named Nuro (who will become Solars nemesis in the following issues). Solar is transformed--when another scientist does tests on him afterwards they discover he has no heartbeat or metabolism! He also has incredible powers, which enable him to survive under the sea, in a volcano and in a tornado. At first he stays secluded in his lab, as to not spread radiation, and this makes love interest Gail suspicious. Eventually he is able to control his radiation leakage. And it's not until the last two issues that he actually dons his red costume. The stories are simple and reflect the mindset of 40 years ago. My favorite thing, though, as with the old Turok comics, are those painted covers.
