This is the first book by Strand I've read and I'm always a bit leery about trying out a new author, not because I think I'll be disappointed but because I'll enjoy them and then have a whole other pile of books on my "to read" list. There's only so much time.
The prologue of the book begins in the mid-40's, where a group of bigfoot-like creatures are gunned down by humans. Only one, a youngster, escapes. Then it's to the 1950's, where we are introduced to eight-year-old Toby. One day, while playing out in the woods, he comes across a cave where a monster lives. It scares him at first but he's fascinated and eventually becomes friends with this creature, who he names Owen. Through the next six decades their lives together are chronicled, with many surprises along the way. There are some really funny parts, some scenes terrifying and bloody, others truly poignant. The most surprising thing of all is that the end of the book actually brought tears to my eyes. It's heart-rending the way KING KONG (Jackson's remake) and BEN (the Willard sequel) are. So if you're ready for a horror novel that will run you through the emotional gamut then check out DWELLER.
