Written by the grandfather of the zombie genre, ESCAPE continues the story begun in PLAGUE OF THE LIVING DEAD. It's 1971, three years after the events of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Now, zombies from a secret lab have escaped and are spreading the contagion. The main zombie, which has some intelligence because he was also contaminated by Agent Orange, is the son of Dr. Melrose, who was doing these experiments for the government. The story switches to Sally and her father, survivors of the original zombie outbreak, who barricade themselves in the father's bar as the zombies try to get in. But another group of people show up, a violent gang called "Sons of Satan". They mess things up and kidnap Sally, leaving her father behind. But he's not about to give up and does everything he can to reunite with his daughter. After this tale is wrapped up, there's a "prequel" in which the intelligent "Hippie" zombie's origin is explained and how his mad scientist father used him in his experiments. It was interesting but I didn't find this as readable as the main story.
ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD: RESURRECTED is crammed with gore and flowing viscera, not to mention plenty of gratuitous nudity. If you're a fan of Russo's work you will not be disappointed.
