If there's one thing I'm familiar with it's vampires, in both books and the movies, so when I received EVERDEAD I was "great, another vampire book". However, I was in for a treat, as EVERDEAD hearkens back to the basic, "need to feed" vampire, and provides a few interesting twists as well.
The story takes place in San Antonio, on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, where a trio of guys are on vacation. One is a handsome "jock type, one is a former college football star now pothead and the third, and main character, Toby, resembles Ron Howard from HAPPY DAYS. His first girlfriend recently dumped him and his friends are helping him get over her. However, it's not easy for Toby to talk to girls, that is, until he speaks with the beautiful Cass, who is vacationing with several of her friends.
One of Cass' friends is missing from the night before, last seen going off with an attractive, dark haired man. She and Toby follow him that night as he takes a girl into an alley--and they witness him biting her throat out. They narrowly escape, as it's sunrise, and see him hide in an abandoned pizza parlor.
The vampire is Luca, who was cruel before he became a vampire. Now, he travels the world, not staying in any place too long for fear of being discovered by humans or "The Originals", ancient vampires who would kill him on site. He sleeps during the day, covered in vermin--rats and cockroaches share his refuge. Toby and Cass get the idea to kill Luca while he's sleeping but it doesn't go quite as planned, especially when he ends up kidnapping her. How can Toby and his friends rescue her and survive?
What I liked best about EVERDEAD is that the author avoids the recent trend to make the vampire this moody, Anne Rice -like bloodsucker, and goes for something much more inspired by Dracula. EVERDEAD is one of the most enjoyable vampire books I have read in years. Recommended.
