This is probably one of the best "re-imaginings" of a television show I've ever seen other than BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series. It begins with Troy and Dillon flying in their vipers--and Troy is drunk. They come across a satellite from Earth. Back on the Galactica Commander Adama is depressed and even puts a gun to his head before he's interrupted by Troy and Dillon's news. The creepy Doctor Zee, who looks like a ten-year-old nerdy kid, examines the satellite and says it's indeed from Earth. It also contains information on the exact location of the long lost planet. Because the inhabitants are more primitive than the fleet Zee recommends that they invade the planet, which Adama adamantly opposes.
The Galactica attempts to land near the White House but it is shot down and Adama critically wounded. Aboard the spaceship The Rising Star, Zee takes command and convinces the council to mount an invasion. A whole fleet of Vipers is dispatched and are in the air over D.C. In the meantime, the government thinks it's the Soviets. And the Soviets launch missile strikes against U.S silos in Montana, Kansas and Nebraska--and more missiles are on their way. The President agrees to launch World War Three and thinks things can't get worse. However, the Cylons, long absent for 20 years, have also found Earth--and Baltar, part Cylon, is looking forward to their reunion.
Don't be put off by the title of the book or that the inspiration is the cheesy 30 year old TV show. This is what the GALACTICA 1980 Television series should have been.
