Author: Brian Keene
GHOUL is Brian Keene's most personal novel to date, about a trio of young boys in the 80's who discover an ancient evil has awakened in their local graveyard. This creature, of course, is a ghoul, a cadaverous monster that consumes dead flesh.
The Ghoul has control over one of the boy's father, so there is a human enemy they have to watch out for as well.
No one believes them about the monster so they have to take it upon themselves to destroy it before it can get to them.
Although there is the necessary violence and gore, it's the characterization of the boys that makes the book flow. The immediate comparison is to Stephen King's IT or the novella THE BODY (STAND BY ME was the movie based on it), as the novel has that nostalgic feel to it. If you've never read Keene before, GHOUL makes an excellent introduction.
