Basically, this is a lot like the movie THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, but instead of the astronaut melting, he's merged with some alien parasite, crashes to earth and starts to grow and grow as he eats and eats.
He still retains some ability to speak and reason, but he and his wife were having trouble with their marriage before he left on his mission and when the army general tries to get her to talk to him/the monster, he flicks off her head.
In order to stop the creature they go to AREA 51 and get the invention of a Nazi scientist, a huge robot. Unfortunately, after the robot beats the monster he starts to implement his own (Well, the Nazi scientist's) agenda, which is world domination. But the monster isn't quite out of the picture and it's up to him to stop this new menace.
This is an entertaining book and Niles definitely takes a nod from all those Godzilla movies, in which he first appeared as a menace and then became a sort of hero.
