A volcano explodes near San Francisco and the eruption transforms the landscape into an inhospitable place for humans. Huge, Godzilla-sized monsters appear from the volcano and claim the land as their own. They are all totally different in appearance, from the salamander-like Akai to the ape-like Banjax to the giant humanoid cockroach Massh to the friendly, intelligent bat-like Nox. The area is sealed off and the monsters are left there. In the next few years the government comes up with a weapon devised by a Japanese scientist-- they create a human/monster hybrid from some of the DNA they obtained whose sole job it is to go in an hunt these creatures down. He looks like a cross between Inframan and Hellboy. He does his job at first, but then realizes that he's basically slaughtering his relatives. He also encounters a woman, Jill Sleet, the recipient of another government experiment. She's the only human to survive the monster "territories".
If you're a fan of giant-monsters this is a must-read, and one of the most fun graphic novels I've read in years. I loved this book!
