Author: Adam Rockoff
This treatise on the Slasher Film genre is right on the mark and an entertaining read as well. Author Rockoff gives the definitive definition of 'What is a Slasher film?' and examines such classics as HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13th. I found myself in sync with what he considers good, underrated Slasher movies such as THE SLAYER (1982), ALONE IN THE DARK and KILLER PARTY (but I don't think NIGHT OF THE CREEPS is pointless - that's one of my favorite movies!). The anecdotes from producers and directors is interesting, primarily because I never heard those stories before. The book ends with the resurgence of these movies, with SCREAM and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. One thing you do realize is how movies come in cycles and I'm sure another bout of 'Slasher' movies, re-invented, will come back in the next few years.
When you start reading the book you know immediately this was a labor of love. And although lots of people are interviewed the voice of it is Rockoff's and his opinion of the genre - and it's a view that is right on. THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SLASHER MOVIE is 'The Book' on Slasher movies. It is also much better than the recent (2007) documentary adaptation of the book, which has an entirely different tone.
