This 2nd book in the RED RISING series is as good as the first. Darrow, posing as one of the elite "Gold" race (he's really a lowly "Red" worker), has infiltrated the ruling class. In fact, he commands one of the starships. But what is supposed to be a war exercise goes awry-and he loses the majority of his crew, which shames the guy he works for. So he's demoted. Also, he's no longer with girlfriend "Mustang", who seems disappointed that he's working for her father. There's plenty of suspense and some interesting twists, particularly when he discovers who the leader of the Resistance, "Ares", is. I wasn't expecting that.
This is a refreshing adventure yarn, sort of HUNGER GAMES meets GAME OF THRONES on Mars. It also reminds me a bit of S.M. Stirling's DRAKA books, with a genetically modified species of man ruling over everyone else. Already I'm halfway through the third book...
