This comic book compilation is a blast from the past. The stories originally appeared in DC's WEIRD WAR tales, HOUSE OF SECRETS, HOUSE OF MYSTERY, STRANGE ADVENTURES and HERCULES UNBOUND. The first tale sets the tone, of a man from hundreds of years from the future goes back in time to our "present". The mini-tales, "The Day After Doomsday" remind me of 60's TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, usually with a single survivor trying to cope with being the only one left on the planet. But the bulk of the tales are THE ATOMIC KNIGHTS, a compilation I've previously reviewed, and HERCULES UNBOUND. Hercules bursts free from his prison after 2,000 years, to find himself in a newly apocalyptic world. He rescues a blind boy and his German Shepherd dog who are battling a mutant octopus-and the two have a slew of adventures, encountering survivors along the way. Not only do they have to deal with monsters but the God Ares messes with Herc, so there are mythological creatures harassing him as well. It's a bit like THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN, though not quite as fun. Eventually he ends up with a woman who used to be a model. The last few stories are from KAMANDI, about a group of intelligent apes fighting against intelligent humanoid rats.
The stories are fairly consistent and exactly what you think the book would be about-but it's something you can't possibly read all at once without it getting a little bit repetitive.
