I was excited when I saw that one of my favorite Marvel horror characters from the 70's was in a new, "explicit content" labelled graphic novel. After all, I had recently dug Marvel's new take on WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. However this excitement steadily deflated as I read HELLSTORM, which has very little to do with that original character, "Son of Satan".
Here Daimon Hellstrom is a drifter passing through New Orleans shortly after hurricane Katrina. Demons are killing people left and right and since demons piss him off he kills them. The demons are red, have horns, tails and goat-legs. The whole works. Even Hellstrom's father is the stereotypical looking Satan. He soon figures out that his father directed him to Louisiana for a reason--and that's to deal with the resurrection of the Egyptian God Osiris, which for some reason irks the devil. Hellstrom encounter Isis and her son Horus, who are looking for the final piece of Osiris' body, which happens to be his you-know-what. Horus, by the way, can turn into this bird-like creature.
While the story was okay, Hellstrom's "voice" is all wrong and it's simply irritating. The only thing I can say I like are the covers by Arthur Suydam, which are made to look like Frank Frazetta paintings from the 70's.
